we’re talking about the pink ribbon that fights for breast cancer! wait, how does a ribbon fight for breast cancer? the pink ribbon has become a symbol for the fight against breast cancer. yet, that little ribbon has done very little to do anything because only about 15% of all sales surrounding the ribbon actually go to breast cancer research. “pinkwashing,” which is a term used to describe the marketing techniques by companies using the ribbon to further their sales of certain products, especially cosmetics, has become a very dangerous venture because they are selling women things that can cause breast cancer!
the pink ribbon can be seen on all sorts of carcinogenic products, such as skin care, cosmetics, and even energy drinks.
this is why it is important to check the ingredients in your products, no matter who is pushing it to you and no matter how safe they say it might be.
there is a great documentary out there called Pink Ribbons, Inc. and it details pinkwashing and all its implications. check out the trailer, or stream it on Netflix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QPZfcYTUaA
